A few years ago, my neighbors invited me to make home made salsa di pomodoro with them here in Sicily. It was an unforgettable experience, and I'll never forget how exhausted I was at the end of the evening. We gathered together at their house in the countryside -- with sisters, brothers, spouses and children -- and we spent the entire day (and evening!) making and bottling fresh home made sauce. We made enough to last through the winter for the entire family!
I really did work up a sweat that day, but it worth it for the spaghettata -- feast of spaghetti -- afterwards! A few weeks later, I brought a bottle of that sauce all the way from Sicily to New Jersey, so that my late grandfather Salvatore could enjoy a taste.
I will be posting an essay to accompany the step-by-step recipe in a following post. For now, here are a few pics in the Salsa di Pomodoro Gallery. This past summer, I organized a Pomodori reunion party for a family of 20! To plan your reunion event or party, please email me the dates you'd like to come to Sicily.
